Blog # 8

What I’ve learned from the oil crisis is that we are so dependant on oil now days. The oil crisis was a big problem because we are so dependant on oil that we had problems to find alternatives to get around, transportation was a one of the major things that were affected due to the oil crisis. Also many people were laid off because of their need of oil. One example would be for people that work in construction, since they used big machinery they were affected since the machinery uses oil to function. Also people could or got fired because they were getting late to work because they did not have gas for their car to get to work.

The oil crisis really showed me that we depend too much on oil and therefore we need to change our habits an find a good alternative for oil. We need oil to fuel our cars, so we should find a good alternative for gas and maybe instead of gas they should use energy like pure electric cars or maybe even cars that run in H2O. We also should

Blog #6 -

In the last month I have seen one of the liquor stores that were near my house close down. When I saw the owner putting the closed sign I asked why and all he said was “Things are too expensive.” He had two workers one for the morning and another one to work for the night. Those two workers now have lost their job and they have to look for another one in order to support their family. When I have to get from one place to another I walk. I don’t have a car so I can’t drive plus I don’t have a drivers license. I used to come to school in a car but it was not mine. My friend used to bring me but now that he has moved from school he cannot bring me anymore so now I have to walk to school and walk back home. I don not use the bus because I do not want to pay fro transportation everyday and I can walk so it is ok. If I went to the store and saw that they had another brand of toilet paper on sale and it was way cheaper than the one that I am used to I would defiantly buy the cheapest one. Everybody should do the same thing we cannot be spending more money. We have to save because we never know how much our food is going to cost tomorrow or next week. Elasticity is a really big role in our society now days.

Food Crisis!

Today while a was walking home I noticed that some stores were closed. I thought that they were just to lazy to open the stores. When I got home my mom told me that they had gone to the store and that she didn't end up buying nothing becuase almost everything was out. She told me that she decided to go home and wait for me till a got back from school, so we can go to another store. As we got there I never would have thought that most stores had the same problem. I asked someone who worked there, and asked them why is there very little food when its always packed. He said the reason why is was like this is because shipping cost are very high. They are being charged more to transport fresh food, and produce from other cities/countries. I've never would have thought that food will be a big problem cause of the oil shortage. Since oil reserves are being wasted, transportation for fresh produce from other places such as (Atlanta Georgia, Seattle Washington, Mexico, Guatemala, .etc) are more harder to accomplish because oil is more expensive.

Some people were going crazy, becuase of the Food Shortage. Not alot of people were complaining but once they notice how much they need food they will start to panic. Not only were people complaining about the food shortage but also about the higher prices. The good thing about this problem is that I will be forced to change my diet, therefore it will benefit me, but not everuone will be happy about this. But I am concerned about the Food Shortage. We are going to all have to buy our food from the local farmers market. The good thing is that we have 2 farmers market that are a little close to were we live. Hopefully prices are not as high there or atleast hope that they have some fresh food. When we got there they still had some fod there, and it was all fresh but sooner or later the oil crisis will affect the farmers market aswell hopefully by the time that happens they have figured out how they will bring the fresh food to our local farmers market.

Life's Changing!

Life is changing; I never would have thought how the oil shortage would affect many things. One thing that has changed is the way we use transportation, Flights are being canceled and that is not good because my parents wanted to go visit their parents in Mexico. And now they are not going to be able to go visit them. They will have to find another way get there if they still want to go visit. The cancelation of U.S. airline flights did not just affect us but it affected many people around the world. People have no other choices but to find other alternatives to get to their destination. The oil shortage does not only affect people like my parents but it will also economically affect some airlines because they are going to have to give refunds because of the flights being canceled.

Other alternatives are really hard to find because my parents are not able to get the car and drive all the way to Mexico. The reasons why is because of the oil shortage. There isn’t a lot of gas; gas lines are so long, it would be a miracle if my parents make it to Mexico to visit their parents. I don’t think that people would travel in bicycles from state to state. This problem not only has negative effects but it also has positive effects too. Not only will this problem help people understand how dependant we are on oil. This will make people find new ways to adapt their life styles and will help them be a little healthier. I know that for sure many things have change since the oil crises started I no longer get to school on car, now I have to walk it over there, the thing is that I have to wake up earlier to get ready or else I will be late everyday.

Supply And Demand

Today, as I were reading a section from the Economics of Today and Tomorrow Book in my Economics class I learned that Supply is the amount of a good or service available for purchase at a any given price. And Demand is the willingness and ability people have to purchase certain goods and services they either need or want, and is the amount that a person is will want to buy at a given price which is more likely at a lower price, and if the price increases the quantity of the product they are willing to buy will decrease.

Two things that I learned about the oil quiz are...

supply
Define supply and demand in your own words and 2) Share something interesting or surprising from the oil quiz.

Uses of oil

Uses of Oil: Oil Products
Source: End Oil

Today I watched a news report about petroleum and I learned that petroleum is used for so many things that we use in our daily lives. Like Jeremy Leggett said, “We have allowed oil to become, vital to virtually everything we do." Petroleum is used for other things than just gasoline for our cars and heating our homes. A large percentage of the oil that is refined into chemicals (also known as petrochemicals) is used for products such as vaseline, detergent, paint, plastic, synthetic rubber, synthetic fibers such as nylon, vinyl, acrylic and polyester, and even for fertilizers/pesticides. What I found most surprising was that Petroleum is used as an active ingredient for many pain relievers. It was very surprising to me because I depend on Medicines such as pain relievers to help with my chemotherapy treatment. I never expected that we were so dependent on petroleum, I’ve never would have thought that petroleum was a big part of our daily lives.

Life Without My Treatment/Medication?

Today I woke up and my mom said that that we had an appointment on monday. I remember that I had heard people on the news said that we are running out on our last oil reserves. I started to think what would my life be, if next time I visit the hospital and there are no more butterfly needles to draw blood. How will my nurses draw blood from me if there are no more butterfly needles? I was also scared to think how will I receive my Chemotheraphy treatment if there are no more syringes. I didn't even want to imagine how will I get my treatment. Another thing I thought about was were was I going to receive my medication pills. Was it going to be in a paper bag or something, because even pastic bags are made out of oil. Hopefully by the time that our last oil reserves are finished doctors have other ways that I can get my treatment in a non-painfull way.
